Hena Akhter’s last words to her mother proclaimed her innocence. But it was too late to save the 14-year-old girl.

Her fellow villagers in Bangladesh’s Shariatpur district had already passed harsh judgment on her. Guilty, they said, of having an affair with a married man. The imam from the local mosque ordered the fatwa, or religious ruling, and the punishment: 101 lashes delivered swiftly, deliberately in public.

Hena dropped after 70.

Bloodied and bruised, she was taken to hospital, where she died a week later.

Amazingly, an initial autopsy report cited no injuries and deemed her death a suicide. Hena’s family insisted her body be exhumed. They wanted the world to know what really happened to their daughter. (source)

“Adultery”, it turned out, meant that she had been raped. More posts in this series are here.

  1. This has been happening for a long time ..in many cultures women have no rights and if we do not put much attention total diaregard for women’s rights will become a reality. .I have not seen many people talking about the ignorant righteous individuals mostly religions persons who are going around giving those who are participating in planned parenthood …placebos instead . to force pregnancies ..punish women for having sex and then have the satisfaction to force those woman to give birth. ..so they can feel superior. ..or even worse.. to keep population of children going so they can have more options..to practice their dirty sinful deeds
