There are clear signs that the EU’s influence at the UN is declining in one of the areas on which it is most united: human rights. Richard Gowan and Franziska Brantner (source)
Richard Gowan and Franziska Brantner have studied the influence of Europe within the UN, and especially its influence regarding human rights. It’s unfortunately the case that Europe’s positions regarding human rights are increasingly marginal within the UN. Ten years ago, the EU’s viewpoints on human rights were shared by about 70% of all UN member states. Now it’s barely half. China and Russia have taken over the influence lost by the EU. The same is true for the U.S. Support for U.S. proposals on human rights went from 77% to 30%.
Sad and frightening news for those of us who want to see universal respect for human rights.
